How to Be a Nurturing Mother

"What we want to do with our children is not merely to control them and keep them in order, but to implant true principles deep in their hearts which shall rule their whole lives, to shape their character from within into Christlike beauty, and to make of them noble men and women, strong for battle and for duty.

They are to be trained rather than governed. Growth of character, not merely good behavior, is the object of all home governing and teaching…

When a little child in a mother’s bosom is loved, nursed, caressed, held close to her heart, prayed over, wept over, talked with, for days, weeks, months, years, it is no mere fancy to say that the mother’s life has indeed passed into the child’s soul. The early years settle what its character will be, and these are the mother’s years."

~ J.R. Miller

This doesn't mean our children won't fall or fail. But I love how it talks about duty to train and love and nurture and to not just focus on the outward obedience but the child as a whole. It takes time, patience, prayer, and much of God's wisdom to raise children and only He will know the outcome. But what a blessing it is to rely on Him and trust Him, and not ourselves, with the results.

Dear sweet Mama, you might not see these results right away. It will take time. It will take trust. But just keep planting the seeds and God will let it grow in it's time. Keep praying for the harvest of all your hard work and time invested --and stay on your knees because He loves your children just as you do.

Remember that love always hopes. We need to have hope in the Lord in what the outcome will be for our children's lives. So don't give up and keep moving on.

You are not alone!

Here are some Bible verses for encouragement:

Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward. - Psalm 127:3

Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it. - Proverbs 22:6

Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. Ephesians 6:4

Whoever spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is diligent to discipline him. -Proverbs 13:24

Discipline your son, and he will give you rest; he will give delight to your heart." -Proverbs 29:17

As a father shows compassion to his children, so the Lord shows compassion to those who fear him. - Psalm 103:13

And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates. -Deuteronomy 6:6-9

Tell your children of it, and let your children tell their children, and their children to another generation. - Joel 1:3

We are praying for you as you build up your home!

God has been impressing on me the deep need for praying over and for my children. He will bring to fruition the plans He has for them, even with failures (theirs and mine). Thank you for beautiful words of encouragement.
